Welcome to AM Barrel Horses

My name is Amber Morris and welcome to AM Barrel Horses.

As a first-generation barrel racer and trainer, I take tremendous pride in my work with a strong focus on achieving a solid foundation and getting horses broke, both on the ground and under saddle.

I've trained AQHA World Champions, NBHA World Finalists, multiple 1D barrels and 19 second pole horses, from colt starting through their first big wins with over $50k earned.

It's my strong belief that the fastest horse is one you don't have to hold its hand around a barrel. One you can drop the rein, trust your training and trust the horse will do the job it was trained to do. The more you're in their face, the shorter their stride, the less confident they become and the slower their time.

That's why my focus is on making all my horses as automatic as possible. I want a horse that hunts a barrel no matter where it's at in the arena and one that feels free throughout it's body.

That's where softness from the face to tail comes in. I don't want to muscle my horses into a position, I want to teach my horses to carry themselves in that position. Should they need adjusting, I can give the cue and they respond, no fuss, no fight.

About Me

I feel this is what's lacking in today's barrel horse training. Too often people skip the most important fundamentals so they can put them on the pattern as quickly as possible. While this can be rewarding in the short term, it can be detrimental long term. When a horse doesn't have the necessary tools to fix a problem that WILL arise later down the road as he gains speed, you lose progress and develop bad habits that are HARD to fix. That's why I believe in getting one BROKE. Not reining broke, not cutting broke, but barrel broke. I want to feel the shoulder lift. I want to feel the back elevate, and I want to feel the ribcage open up and the inside hock engage. Once they learn HOW to carry themselves and place their feet, all they need to learn is the pattern, and in my opinion, that's the easiest part to teach if you did your homework correctly.

Most importantly, what you'll get from me is honesty. I won't keep a horse in my program if I know he won't work out. If the horse doesn't fit my program, I'll let you know. If you're hoping for a 1D prospect but I'm working with a horse who's work ethic challenges the most dedicated couch potato, I'll let you know you have a 5D plug and not a 1D superstar. I'll be upfront with all costs and issues, allowing you to make the best decision for your money and investment.

If my training style is one you feel you can ride behind, don't hesitate to schedule a consultation today! I look forward to working on your unicorn and helping you make your dreams come true.
